Winemaker Musso Valter
Barbaresco / Barbera, Italy
Some more information about 'Musso Valter'
With Musso, our portfolio expands to include the absolute pinnacle of Barbaresco. Their historic vineyards even adjoin those of their world-famous neighbor, Gaja.
In 2014, their Barbaresco ‘Pora’ was even chosen as the best Barbaresco of the year… surpassing Gaja! The estate was founded in 1929, the year of the Great Depression in Italy. It was certainly not an easy start, but that did not prevent them from steadily working toward the absolute top of the region. Initially, they started with just two tiny vineyards in Cavanna and Ronchi, to which later some of Barbaresco’s most celebrated sites were added.
Today, the estate is run by father Valter and son Emanuele Musso. Despite their immense status, they manage it with an admirable humility that matches their equally impressive drive. Musso’s vineyards are now located in four of Barbaresco’s most prestigious sites: Pora, Rio Sordo, Ronchi, and Cavanna. Every wine and every grape is treated with the utmost care, delivering an unforgettable experience to anyone who carries a deep appreciation for fine wine. With great pride and respect, we are delighted to introduce and recommend this iconic winery to our wine-loving customers.

The vineyards of Musso
The climate
The climate in Barbaresco is a continental climate with Mediterranean influences, where winters are cold with occasional light frost, slowing down vegetation, and summers are warm but, due to the hills, not excessively hot, allowing the Nebbiolo grape to ripen slowly and optimally; rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, often with slightly more in spring and autumn, and the well-draining hillside soils prevent root rot, enabling Nebbiolo’s long growing season to contribute to the maximum development of complexity and aromas.
The terroir
The terroir of Musso Valter is characterized by vineyards mostly situated on south- to southeast-facing hills for optimal sun exposure, on soils of limestone-rich marl, typical of Barbaresco, with the addition of clay that promotes water retention while providing structure and body to the wine. The elevation of 200–350 meters above sea level ensures cooler nights and helps preserve the natural acidity of the grapes.
Winemaking in Barbaresco / Barbera
Musso Valter works with a combination of traditional and modern winemaking techniques. The grapes are carefully selected and harvested by vineyard plot, preserving the character of each site. The Nebbiolo grapes form the basis of their Barbaresco, a wine renowned for its finesse, aromas of roses, cherries, and spices, and its ability to develop greater complexity with a few years of aging.
The Barbera wines from Musso Valter, on the other hand, are lively and fruity, with fresh acidity and soft tannins. Some cuvées undergo a short period of oak aging, adding an extra dimension of flavor and structure. Thanks to their small-scale and precise approach, the wines stand out for their authentic, terroir-driven style.
